CONCORD-Charles Alvin Topping (Al), 92, of Concord, NH passed away on November 12, 2016 at the CRVNA Hospice House.

Al was born on May 25, 1924 in Portland, Maine of Canadian parents Charles and Dorothy (Thompson) Topping. He spent most of his early years living in Toronto, Canada.

At the age of 18 Al joined the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Elizabeth Stanton. During WWII, he participated in invasions in the European and Pacific theaters as a Signalman Petty Officer First Class. He also served briefly in the Korean conflict.

Al was born on May 25, 1924 in Portland, Maine of Canadian parents Charles and Dorothy (Thompson) Topping. He spent most of his early years living in Toronto, Canada.

After his discharge from the Navy, Al moved to Bridgeport, Ct and began a 40-year career with Bridgeport Metal Goods retiring as Secretary/Assistant Treasurer serving on the Board of Directors.

He moved to Monroe, Connecticut in 1962 to raise his family and became deeply involved in various community organizations. Al was extremely proud of the 24 years he volunteered with the local chapter of the Administrative Management Society, serving as Chapter President, Area Director of New England Chapters, and International Vice President of Finance. As a member of the Episcopal Church, Al served as a vestry member and treasurer and worked on finance committees with Bishops throughout the State of Florida.

Upon retiring to Stuart, Florida, Al worked as a golf ranger and traveled the country with Elderhostel Travel Tours. He then moved to Concord, New Hampshire to be closer to family.

Al spent most of his life singing in various Episcopal Church choirs and with the Treasure Coast Community Singers. He also was an avid New York Giant, New York Yankee, and Toronto Maple Leaf Fan.

Al was predeceased by his first wife, Mildred Ferguson Topping.

He is survived by his second wife, Norma Burns Topping of Concord, NH; his children, Ronald Topping of Derby, CT, Karen Kowtko (Tom) of Southbury, CT, Joanne Rutkowski (Mike) of Monroe, CT; grandchildren, Jeff Topping, Beth Woodward, Lauren and Ryan Kowtko; great-grandchildren Parker and Sydney Woodward; and several extended family members in New York and Vermont.

A memorial service celebrating Al's life will be celebrated at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Concord on Saturday, November 19th at 1 o'clock.
